After working for a short time for his father, he decided on a career in the design field and enrolled at the Lowell Institute a. After his local training and a one-year training in lithography at a company in Boston , he began in 1880 his further studies at the Art School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts , where he remained until 1882. He met here on the artist Frank Weston Benson from Salem in Massachusetts.
