Civil War Bespoke Silver 8R ID Disk for Thomas W. Bailey 1st MO Engineer
$18,000.00
- Civil War personalized "Dog Tag" for Major Thomas W. Bailey
- Though official US Army dog tags weren't issued until later wars, soldiers in the Civil War would often commission their own so their bodies could be identified in case they died in battle.
- This one was issued after Bailey was "mustered out" ie discharged, so this was likely commissioned after the war.
- The symbols on the front indicate Bailey was in the 14th Army Corps under General William Rosecrans and served in the Corps of Engineers.
- He was born on September 9th, 1826. According to service records, he was commissioned at the age of 34 on September 1st, 1861 into "K" Company in the Missouri 1st Engineering regiment. He changed companies a couple of times, but was promoted to Captain on October 24th, 1862 and Major on June 12th, 1865. He was officially "mustered out" on July 22nd, 1865 after Lee's surrender at Appomattox, and died on June 14th, 1886 in Burlington, IA.
- The 1st Missouri Engineers figured largely in Sherman's March to the Sea and Carolinas Campaign. In addition to building roads and repairing railroads and bridges, the regiment provided "pontoneer" detachments which transported and constructed mobile temporary bridges which sped the movement of Sherman's units. Confederate General Joe Johnston paid tribute to the 1st Missouri (and Sherman's other engineers) when he said: "When I learned that Sherman's army was marching through the Salk swamps, making its own corduroy roads at the rate of a dozen miles a day, I made up my mind that there had been no such army in existence since the days of Julius Caesar." (from Wikipedia)
- Weight: 24.2 grams
- Given the diameter (appx 38 mm) and reeded edge, the original coin was most likely an 8 real.
- An amazing piece of Civil War history!
