- Issued under the rule of Severus Alexander, the 26th Emperor of the Roman Empire (222-235 AD)
- As emperor, Alexander's peace time reign was prosperous, however militarily Rome was confronted with the rising Sassanid Empire
- He managed to check the threat of the Sassanids, but when campaigning against Germanic tribes, Alexander attempted to bring peace by engaging in diplomacy and bribery; this alienated many in the legions and led to a conspiracy to assassinate and replace him
- Obverse features a bust of the emperor, facing right, with the legend "IMP C M AVR SEV ALEXAND AVG"
- Reverse depicts Providentia holding rod and scepter, standing left with globe at feet, with the legend "PROVIDENTIA AVG"
- In ancient Roman religion, Providentia is a divine personification of the ability to foresee and make provision; she was among the embodiments of virtues that were part of the Imperial cult of ancient Rome
- Providentia was an important moral and philosophical abstraction in Roman discourse; Cicero says it is one of the three main components of prudentia, "the knowledge of things that are good or bad or neither," along with memoria, "memory," and intellegentia, "understanding"
