  • 220 AD Roman Province of Egypt Billon Tetradrachm
  • Issued under the rule of Elagabalus, the 25th Emperor of the Roman Empire (218-222 AD)
    • A member of the Severan Dynasty, he was Syrian, the second son of Julia Soaemias and Sextus Varius Marcellus; in his early youth he served as a priest of the god Elagabal (in Latin, Elagabalus) in the hometown of his mother's family, Emesa
    • In 218, Elagabalus, barely fourteen years old, became emperor, initiating a reign remembered mainly for sexual scandal and religious controversy
  • Obverse features a bust of the emperor, facing right
  • Reverse depicts Nilus holding reed and cornucopia, seated left, with "LΔ" in left field
    • Nilus, in Greek mythology, was the son of Oceanus and Tethys and was the god (and representation) of the Nile river itself
  • Struck from billon (bronze with a small amount of silver)
