  • Issued under the rule of Septimius Severus, the 20th Emperor of the Roman Empire (193-211 AD)
    • Severus was born in Leptis Magna in the Roman province of Africa; as a young man he advanced through the cursus honorum—the customary succession of offices—under the reigns of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus
    • Severus seized power after the death of Emperor Pertinax in 193 during the Year of the Five Emperors
  • Obverse features a draped bust of Julia Domna, facing right
    • Empress and wife of Roman Emperor Lucius Septimius Severus and mother of Emperors Geta and Caracalla, Julia was famous for her prodigious learning as well as her extraordinary political influence
  • Reverse depicts Pudicitia, seated on throne left, with the legend "PVDICTIA"
    • Pudicitia ("modesty" or “sexual virtue”) was a central concept in ancient Roman sexual ethics; it was most often a defining characteristic of women, but men who failed to conform to masculine sexual norms were said to exhibit feminizing impudicitia, sexual shamelessness
