- Issued under the rule of Hieron II, the Greek Sicilian King of Syracuse (270-215 BC)
- Pressed by the invading Roman forces, in 263 he concluded a treaty with Rome, by which he was to rule over the south-east of Sicily and the eastern coast; From this time until his death in 215 BC he remained loyal to the Romans, and frequently assisted them with men and provisions during the Punic war
- He kept up a powerful fleet for defensive purposes, and employed his famous kinsman Archimedes in the construction of those engines that, at a later date, played so important a part during the siege of Syracuse by the Romans
- Obverse features a bust of Poseidon, facing left
- Poseidon is one of the twelve Olympian deities of the pantheon in Greek mythology
- His main domain is the ocean, and he is called the "God of the Sea"; additionally, he is referred to as "Earth-Shaker" due to his role in causing earthquakes, and has been called the "tamer of horses"
