  • 99,000 coins were melted in 1888, making this a scarce coin
  • Issued under the rule of Leopold II, the 2nd King of the Belgians (1865-1909)
  • King Leopold II was the founder and sole owner of the Congo Free State, a private project undertaken on his own behalf
  • The original Congolese franc was in use from 1887-1967, when it was replaced by the zaïre
  • Obverse features crowned monograms circling a center hole
  • Reverse depicts a star with denomination above and date below
  • Mintage of 125,000 coins (only 26,000 escaped melting in 1888)
  • Struck from copper
  • Slabbed by NGC with the title "1887 BEL.CONGO 2C"
