Nikos Stavroulakis's work covers an extraordinary range of techniques and materials: oils, watercolour, ink, woodcuts, canvas, paper, parchment. All his work, however is characterized by his delight in form, both man-made and natural. Seen through Stavroulakis's eyes, form takes on a sense of magic which is deeply rooted in tradition and myth as well as in the abiding awe which mankind has ever felt toward the power of nature. Nikos Stavroulakis studied Byzantine and Islamic Art and Archaeology in Great Britain and the United States. While following an academic career he has pursued a career as a painter and illustrator, and since his first one-man show with New Forms Gallery, Athens in 1962, he has participated in exhibitions all over the world.
